very person meant to educate them, now their parents are suing clark county school district, because they say the sexual abuse could have been avoided... fox5's miguel martinez-valle talked to the parents lawyer. he's live to break down what he found in the lawsuit. in 2008 school teacher jerimiah mazo was charged with sexually abusing his students at simmons elementary school, the case was dismissed... and clark county transferred mazo to hayden elementary... now he's in prison for molesting students from his new school, and the parents of these kids say clark county school district is to partly to blame ... " we want to make sure this never, ever happens to someone elses child in our community." jerimiah mazo is facing up to 60 years in prison for sexually abusing some of his students, but parents of the victims don't think

" they made a huge huge mistake here, by just trying to sweep this under the rug and ignoring it." they think clark county school district could have prevented the whole thing, seeing as mazo was accused of the same crime just years earlier.. " this defense that clark county school district keeps putting out there that well, the criminal court dismissed these charges in 2008 there's nothing we can do, that position in ludacris" robert eglet is leading the case against the district, he say's there's no way of knowing exactly how many children were victims of mazo or the phsycological effects the abuse will have on the kids who have come forward. " they've said they dont want to have children, because they dont want this to happen to one of their children." he says the school district should have done more to prevent this from happening...includi ng conducting a private investigation into mazo's earlier case, and notifying the parents about his accused history... " at a very minimum, at a very minimum, they could have transfered him to a position where

access to be able to do this to children." the damage is done, but eglet and the parents he represents hope the lawsuit will lead the school district to change their and prevent more kids from falling victim to abuse. " year after year is an incident in our school district like this." we did reach out to clark county school distirst the story, they said they do not comment on pending litigation. reporting live, miguel martinez- valle, fox5 news local. las vegas. mazo was originally facing 32 counts of child molestation, last year he plead guilty to three lesser counts of attempted lewdness with a child so he could avoid trial dozens of guests evacuted from a strip hotel-- for hours... as hazmat crews were called to the luxor after an unknown substance was found. luxor we were blocked so we had to walk half a block to the front then they wouldnt let us back up to our room there were sections in the lobby that were roped off and they wouldnt let us come back to our rooms." the clark county fire department and metro police were called... after housekeeping staff found a suspicious substance in a room that had just been checked out... as a precaution crews evacuated guests on the 27the , 28th and 29th floors. "we look at this like we would look at any other residence... and other structure any other building. our number one goal is keeping the community safe. " authorities did not say what the substance was... but guests were allowed back in around 3 p-m. the luxor gave evacuated guests free exhibit and spa passes. two people were critically hurt in an early morning shooting. it happened during a home invasion. it was just before five this morning in a gated neighborhood in summerlin.

teenager who they think is his daughter with gunshot wounds. crews rushed them to university medical center in critical condition. police found a gun in the park across the street... that's the gun they think the gunman used. now neighbors are on edge. tell you about.... one person is dead after a shooting in northwest las vegas. fox5's abby theodros is live at the scene near lone mountain and cliff shadows. abby, what have you learned? theres a heavy police presence tonight in this quiet neighbornood. police say a man was shot to death by a woman he was in a relationship with. and if you look behind me you can see a police investigation in the early stages metro's homicide unit is still in the early phases of their investigation but we know this started as a domestic dispute between a couple.

leading up to the shooting but the woman told a responding officer that she is the victim of domestic violence. neighbors we spoke with tell us this is the first incident of this nature to happen in the 7 years they've been here. "we all walk our dogs toghether and talk to everybody. we know them personally and have movie in the parks and we jus worry about everybody of course." as you just heard- that couple told us everyone knows each other in this neighborhood. everyone is friendly with one another and they're truly concerned that they know the couple involved in this fatal shoot out. we are still in the very early phases of this

major marijuana grow house in the southeast part of the valley. neighbors say they didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. i had no idea, never seen anybody there. never had any inkling anything was going on there police were called to the home near hacienda and pecos.... just before ten this morning. when someone got to the house to do some work.. and discovered the plants. a family is thanking a good samaritan tonight... for pulling a woman from her burning home. "he grabbed her, pulled her out, dragged her and threw her over the fence. he was a pretty nice guy. i don't know him and i didn't have a chance to thank him, so if you're watching this, thank you. " the fire broke out this morning near washington and rancho. smoke was pouring from the home-- when a passer-by helped the woman to safety. firefighters say the fire may have started from a

the bedroom. the f-b-i says it surrounded the last armed protesters occupying a federal wildlife refuge in oregon. an f-b-i spokesperson says agents tried to approach one of the protesters as he was riding an a-t-v outside barricades. nevada assemblywoman michele fiore flew to oregon today to help negotiate for the protestors. fiore says she is driving to the wildlife refuge to help peacefully end the standoff. over a open phone line... livestreamed on the internet, fiore says she will arrive att the refuge near burns, oregon by one a-m. i'm driving to burns, i'm driving to you. do you hear me. we need thousands to drive to burns. we need thousands to drive here.but make them stand down. ok you know what? what did we talk about. we talked about me getting to

about walking out together." the protester returned to the refuge, and the f- b-i placed agents at all of the barricades. the f-b-i says no shots have been fired, and agents are negotiating with those inside. it's believed there are four people inside the refuge. the situation began january second, when protesters took over the refuge to decry what they called government overreach of federal land. protest leader ammon bundy and several others were arrested last month. a community organization designed to help people in need.... has been the source of multiple break ins. as fox5's abby theodros shows us... the director of bailey's community nest is making a plea to the public. its just sickening. why steal it when you can come in and stand in line and get it for free you know? charmaine coleman says she still can't believe someone could

from a community agency that does so much good in the neighborhood. i have children and i have a grandchild and im disabled so food stamps run slim and when youre hurting for food and you come here you get vegetables, you get milk, you get things that you really need and i benefit from it very gratefully and a lot. baileys community nest serves many people like coleman who live in and around the eastern ridge. however - in the last two weeks they've experienced a string of thefts that have depleted their food supply. in a face book post director sherry koch said most recently - someone stole 10 cases of turkey breast lunch meat and 20 cases of sports drinks. fox 5 wasn't allowed on the bailey middle school campus where the pantry is located but parents familiar with the service say there are security cameras on site -that they hope recorded the theft. richard hodnett has a daughter who volunteers with the pantry - he says campus

5th grader hailed a hero for jumping in to save his friend's life... when he began choking during lunch hour. today... that student from schorr elementary school was honored in a special way. "when you make a very special decision in life it impact others and that's what we are here today to do." one special 5th grader at schorr elementary honored in front of his school today. "2 weeks ago today, my friend gabriel here was having lunch in this room and his friend kyle was also having lunch when kyle was eating, kyle unfortunatley began to choke on his food." "it felt scary. i couldn't breath. my throat started to get sore a lot. i couldn't really move." that's when gabriel wallace stepped in quickly... and performed the hemlich maneuver on his friend kyle sucalidto "well i saw that he was choking, but i really thought it was a joke. and then i did that and i realized he spit the

for gabriel because his favorite animal is a great white shark. firefighters could be seen hanging 500 feet in the air..... las vegas fire and rescue... were training today on the high roller. the crews were practicing drills... and rescue operations... it was all part of scheduled safety inspections. the drills will continue tomorrow. lets give it another go. that's what the dmv is saying after last year's virtual line system failed. now its putting 300-thousand dollars more into dash pass. this allows people to check in alerts updating line... along with making appointments. the main benefit of this is we'll be able to offer appointments here in las vegas in just a few weeks. we've already been doing appointments in reno on a pilot basis and it h as worked very well in the reno office. dmv officials say last summer the system failed checked in online and never showed up. a former clark county music teacher is behind

" they have been which tells me they havent done anything, so in order to get them to change their behavior and make sure this doesnt else children in our community, its going to take a lawsuit like this involving money damages to get them to change their behavior." eglet says theres no way of knowning how many children mazo abused, but he says parents of the victims who have come forward described their kids throwing tantrums in order to avoid going to school, being in bad moods on days they had to take his music class, one has even said they dont want to have children because they do not want them to be abused as well. the school distrcit has said

ferguson. the police department in ferguson, missouri has been under federal scrutiny since the death of unarmed teen michael brown 18 months ago... the city later signed an agreement with the feds, aimed at reforming their criminal justice system... but yesterday the ferguson city council voted to change the terms of the deal. city leaders say they don't have the money to make the settlement work... " flint mayor karen weaver joined other officials and public health experts in testifying. but one person was noticably absent... michigan governor rick snyder declined an invitation to the house democratic committee hearing. congress is trying to figure out why dangerously high levels of lead remained in flint's water supply for months and what can be done to help residents. "so our research, which is now published in the american journal of public health, showed a significant increase in the blood lead levels of children. in the entire city of flint, we saw that the blood lead levels, the percentage of children with elevated blood lead levels doubled. and in some neighborhoods it actually tripled. " governor snyder laid out his budget proposal to the state legislature-- today... requesting 195 million dollars to help the city with the water crisis.
